essay - predatory monetization schemes used in mobile video games introduction

$2 million is the record on the amount spent on microtransactions by one person (Stojanovic,2022). The mobile game industry is a multibillion growing industry which is evolving its tactics into being more predatory. This is displayed by the fake video game ads and microtransactions.(Mago,2022) The mobile game industry used to only have revenue from ads in the game, however this had a turn and many mobile video games are getting revenue from ads and now microtransactions in their video games.. This essay will be going over the predatory monetization schemes in mobile video games such as micro transactions   and fake mobile game ads.

conclusion

In conclusion the essay  went over the predatory monetization schemes that companies are using in the new and current mobile games. The predatory monetization schemes this essay analysed are  microtransactions and  fake mobile ads that companies use. Fake mobile games should be removed as they are fraudulent, since most of the content they promote is not theirs. Those ads also exploit kids to get ad revenue from it. Microtransactions are predatory as they sell premium currencies in bundles which if you spend more money the consumers get a better deal in the end. These predatory monetization schemes must end as they are predatory and take advantage of people who are gullible. Reference list Mago, Z., 2020.  Games on social networks and the promotion within .  These are two types of micro transactions which vary from loot boxes where there is a chance you get something good or when you buy the premium currency in the video game that gives you guaranteed exclusive items that give you an edge on free to play players. Casino.ca did a survey on 1003 people to ask them if they think that loot boxes are a form of gambling where  61.5% agreed that it is (Murray,2019). Around 30% of those participants purchased loot boxes to gain an advantage over other users(Murray,2019).Another problem with microtransactions is that with premium currencies you can purchase them in bundles, which where the more you spend the more of the premium currency you get(Chernyak,2014).This has  psychological effects on the user that if they want to spend their money to get the smallest amount on currency , you will will be missing out on the discount on the larger bundle. The mobile games being free to play allows companies to gain their monetization through ...

Major Project theme Mobile Games

Mobile Games Mobile gaming is larger than pc and consoling gaming combined. This market is so profitable as it targets  a larger market audience which are the day to day people. Unlike pc gaming which targets a smaller audience, as owning high end pc is less common compared to owning a standard phone which most people own in this day and age. Mobile gaming contribution to the overall gaming industry was 57% out of a $174bn gaming market. The other 43% being the console and pc market. Which both have smaller target audiences as they aim to gamers unlike mobile gaming where people already have the phone to access the video games, this makes it that companies have more potential customers in mobile gaming industry compared to pc/console gaming industry. Mobile gaming in 2021 had over 2,659billion users all over the world , which is a huge amount of potential customers to your mobile gaming business. Over 1,293billion users where from Asia , this is a huge target audience th...

Computer ethics link to major project theme (commandment 9)

Image
Commandment  9 (Dungeon keepers mobile game, Electronic Arts) The ninth commandment  mentions how you need to think about the social consequences that your program or system that you designed has. This is especially common in mobile games as they commit predatory business practices with pay to win mechanics. Which children who do not know better might have access to their parents credit card, which so they purchase  a large amount of in game "exclusive items" which. The biggest contender of this is loot boxes where you pay real life money to buy a mystery box which may contain exclusive and overpowered items/characters , so people who want to be good at the game are enticed to buy. However this has a negative affect as it also targets underage children who want to be better than their friends for example and spend a lot of money to get items. This is practically gambling on a smaller scale for kids in a video game which is a huge ethical issue. Due to the g...
